Our Musical Director...

 

Our new Musical Director appointed as from the 21st August 2006 is Denzil Stephens, a renowned figure throughout the Brass and Wind Banding world.

Denzil Stephens started with the famous Black Dyke Mills band in 1945, then with the Central band of the Royal Air Force in 1951, playing solo euphonium with both bands.    He was selected for promotion at an early age, becoming a Director of Music in March 1959 with the rank of Flying Officer,  attaining the rank of Squadron Leader whilst serving as Director of Music at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, in Lincolnshire.
During this time he became a member of PRS and MCPS, and qualified as an Associate of the Royal College of Music (ARCM), and Licenciate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM), for military and brass band mastership.

Denzil left the RAF in 1978 to return to his first love of brass bands, having many successes at competitions with various championship section bands, including European Champions (Cory), BBC TV Best of Brass (Carlton Main Frickley Colliery ), Yeovil Entertainment (Cory Hat trick).

There was a period as Music Editor to a well known brass band music publishing firm at Gloucester, before eventually moving down to Cornwall
where he is now settled in the small village of St.Dennis.

Denzil is also the proprietor of  
Sarnia Music  specialises in music for brassband and brass instruments and was started around 1979 mainly for an outlet for Denzil’s  compositions and arrangements of music for brassbands.

Denzil plays euphonium again,  with the South West Tuba Quartet, after a period of 30 years as a conductor, and now conducts the 
Lostwithiel Town Band in East Cornwall.
